The Dublin Centre for Clinical Research held its inaugural Research Nurses Day on 1st October 2008 at the Davenport Hotel in Dublin.
Over 30 research nurses from the Dublin area teaching hospitals participated in a series of seminars addressing the development of research nursing as a distinct area of professional nursing practice.
The Dublin Centre for Clinical Research is a clinical research network initiative funded by the Health Research Board and the Wellcome Trust. It aims to enlarge the scale of clinical research projects carried out in Dublin by fostering collaborative clinical research among the teaching hospitals and the three Dublin Medical Schools.
"Research Nurses are the critical component of Ireland's expanding clinical research infrastructure", says Jeremy Towns, Programme Manager for the Dublin Centre for Clinical Research.
According to Ailbhe Cullen, Nursing Director for the Dublin Centre for Clinical Research:"Currently research nurses have a wide range of interests and experience and now the Dublin Centre for Clinical Research can offer them a more coherent approach to education, training and professional support."
The Dublin Centre for Clinical Research research professionals will be among the first to participate in a common Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course developed by the Irish Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ICRIN), and Professor Seamus Cowman of RCSI and Ailbhe Cullen have developed a post diploma/degree course in clinical research for research professionals.
The afternoon session featured a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Ruth Barrington, Chief Executive of Molecular Medicine Ireland, and which included Dr. Mary McCarron, Head of the School of Nursing at Trinity College Dublin, Professor Seamus Cowman, Professor of Nursing at the RCSI and Ms. Sarah Condell who has recently carried out a review of research nursing in Ireland on behalf of the Health Research Board and the Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery.
