A hands-on
introduction to Python programming, designed for first-year PhD
students in bioinformatics, but also open to others with an interest
in using Python. Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented
programming language. Please note: you must bring a laptop computer
with Python installed (please see the information below).

Mon
29 Nov; 0900-1300
Basics: local/global variables, functions, if/else, arrays/lists,
loops.
Tue
30 Nov; 0900-1300
More basics: quick repeat of day 1, object-oriented programming,
UML-class diagrams, reading files, some data-structures.
Wed
1 Dec; 0900-1300
Bioinformatics: biopython, parsing swissprot flat-files,
storing
swissprot records in objects and some basic calculating over these
records. Potentially: SQL database access, blast, fasta.
Thu
2 Dec; 0900-1300
More bioinformatics: looping trees using recursion, alignments.
Maximum
number of participants is 40. You can attend either the whole
course or selected days. Please apply online (applications for this
course will be accepted 1-22 November 2004).
No
computers are available, so you must bring your own laptop with
Python installed* (get Python from www.python.org/download/).
The course instructors will get you up and running during the first
morning.
*Python
is copyrighted but placed under an open source license, meaning
that Python can be freely used and distributed.
