Insulin receptor tyrosine kinase signalling: from molecules to mice
Dr Derek Brazil (UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular & Biomedical Research)

An overview of tyrosine kinase receptor signaling, with specific emphasis on insulin receptor signaling pathways. Scaffold/adaptor proteins typified by insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins and their role in signal transduction. PI3Kinase signaling, with particular focus on Protein kinase B (PKB/Akt) signaling. Elements of personal research to be discussed will include the role of IRS-2 in physiology and diabetes, mouse models in diabetes research, and the function of PKB/Akt in diabetes and cancer.
