DMMC Course: MOLECULAR CELL BIOLOGY IN ACTION
1110-1230 Wednesday 23 November 2005. UCD Conway Institute Lecture Theatre
Cell
division/meiosis
Dr Rosemary Clyne (UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular & Biomedical
Research)
Genome stability relies on the correct distribution of chromosomes during cell division; errors in chromosome transmission during either mitosis or meiosis can result in an abnormal chromosome complement and the biological consequences for such mistakes can be severe. This lecture will provide an overview of the mechanics of cell division during mitosis and meiosis. An experimental strategy to dissect these events, which fascinated even the earliest cytologists, will also be presented.
