DMMC Course: MOLECULAR CELL BIOLOGY IN ACTION
1000-1120 Wednesday 2 November 2005. UCD Conway Institute Lecture Theatre
Basic
molecular cell biology mechanisms
Dr
John Baugh (UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular & Biomedical Research)
This session will briefly introduce many of the basic molecular events that govern cellular function, and help set the foundation for the following advanced translational seminars. Starting in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell we will track the processes of DNA replication and gene expression. Newly formed RNA transcripts will then be followed to the cytoplasm where they undergo translation and processing to mature protein gene products. Ending with a brief overview of protein trafficking, secretion and proteosomal degradation we will complete the basic molecular cascade that is essential to all cellular functions.
