DMMC Course: MOLECULAR CELL BIOLOGY IN ACTION

0930-1050 Monday 24 January 2005. Conway Institute Lecture Theatre, UCD

The cell cycle Prof Stephen Pennington, UCD

The mammalian cell cycle – the process by which one cell becomes two – is the one of the most fundamental series of events that underlies the development of an organism and its continued maintenance. Aberrations in the regulation of the cell cycle also underlie the properties of transformed cells that contribute to the formation of tumours. In this lecture, the major events of the eukaryotic cell cycle will be introduced and the basic mechanisms that are used to regulate these events will be described. Emphasis will be placed on how these regulatory mechanisms are altered in transformed cells and how they are linked with the regulation of apoptosis.
