Zebrafish have entered the arena of vertebrate biology as a mainstream model system. The use of genetic tools in this fish, combined with the ease of embryological investigations have enhanced our understanding of vertebrate development. Several mutant zebrafish are representative of known forms of human genetic diseases and ready analysis of these phenotypes offers real potential for improvements in our understanding and treatment of these diseases.
