Durkan Lecture Theatre, Institute of Molecular Medicine, TCD, St James's Hospital

The Hallmarks of Cancer
Prof Mark Lawler (St James's Hospital & TCD)

In order to set the scene for this DMMC course, an initial overview of cancer biology and mechanisms of cancer development will be provided. This will enable course participants to place in context our understanding of normal cellular processes as key to informing our knowledge of cancer development. Particular emphasis will be placed on the various pathways and processes which are key to the development of a malignant cell including (i) self sufficiency in growth signals, (ii) insensitivity to anti growth signals, (iii) limitless replicative potential, (iv) ability to evade apoptosis, (v) mechanisms of tumour invasiveness and metastasis and (vi) sustained angiogenesis. Each of these traits will be discussed and examples provided to show how these traits are acquired in human cancer.
